To Breastfeed Or Bottle Feed Is the Question!

Welcome to the never-ending debate and a question, which probably haunts each and every mother, especially a new one.  The major health organizations in the world, including the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) recommend that mother’s milk is the best nutrition for a new born baby. It helps to guard against infection, allergies and other chronic conditions. It contains almost all the necessary ingredients for a growing baby.

The Wonders of Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding Is Good Or Babies Because:

  • It contains natural antibodies, which helps to prevent various illnesses in a newborn and also works against allergies
  • It also helps to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome
  • Breast milk is easy to digest for the newborn as their digestive system is still developing, so they are less constipated and reduces colic pain
  • Breast milk helps to improve the intelligence of a child. Studies prove that breastfed babies
  • Breast milk also helps to reduce risk of obesity, asthma, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases in the future

Breastfeeding is not only good for babies, but beneficial for mothers too. Breastfeeding helps to reduce the risk of breast cancer in women and also helps to lose calories. It has many more benefits for a lactating mother. If a mother has to go out for work, then breast milk can also be pumped in a bottle, stored and given to the baby.

The Reasons For Bottle Feeding

While we have discussed, the benefits of breastfeeding, many mothers have to choose bottle feeding as well. A mother starts lactating immediately after delivery and starts feeding the baby as well. It is the major source of food and nutrition for the newborn. But, sometimes, due to certain health conditions, a mother is not able to produce enough quantity of milk for feeding the new born in regular intervals. A proper supply of milk is also important to alleviate the risk of jaundice in a newborn. In this case, doctors would recommend giving the bottle or formula feed to the babies.

Going forward, if the mother is producing enough milk, then she can continue else she needs to shift to formula feed for the benefit of the baby. It is important to choose the right formula as it might be a bit difficult to digest. Sometimes, if a mother has to go out, anybody else in the house can feed the baby in a bottle. However, there are hassles too, as you might have to carry all the accessories wherever you go.

Latching is another reason why mothers might need to shift to bottle feed. If the baby is not able to latch properly during a feed and is not getting enough food, the baby will cry. Then, it is advisable to calm the baby with bottle feeding. It is important that you consult a lactation expert in case you face such issues. After one year or so, bottle feed can be started along with breastfeed to get the baby adjusted, which helps in weaning too.

So, we can see that breastfeeding is no doubt the best things for both the baby and the mother. However, under certain circumstances, bottle feeding might be required for the baby. There is nothing wrong about it and no mother should be judged on the same either. Though, it is recommended that mothers should continue to feed their babies breast milk till about a year or two, it is a mother’s choice to continue or shift to bottle feed after the initial six months.

As a mother, you know what is best your child, so let the decision be YOURS.
